RESPONDING TO AN INCIDENT
GENERAL NOTES
WHEN RESPONDING APPLIANCES:
- Officers in Charge of the first responding appliance must
ensure they have sufficient information, before
responding to the incident.
- The Officer in Charge of the first appliance will, while
mobile to the scene check that the Group Base has been
notified.
- As soon as practicable (possibly from an indication of
the size of the smoke column) the Officer in Charge must
request additional resources if considered necessary.
ON ARRIVAL OF THE INCIDENT:
The OIC of the first appliance will ascertain and give a
SITREP on:
- Type of Incident.
- Size of incident.
- If any life or property is threatened.
- The most appropriate access for additional appliances to
approach the incident.
- Alert approaching assistance to any Dangers.
- If additional assistance is required.
- If it appears there are suspicious circumstances ensure
Police have been requested to attend.
- Advise other Authorities as required, such as E.T.S.A.,
S.A.W.C., Ambulance etc.

ARRIVING AT THE STATION
First to the Station
- The Fire Station door will be open. The door is
automatically unlocked electronically when the alarm is
activated (to reset the door, press button located near
the electrical circuits behind the door.)
- Turn off the siren and reset Telecom pagers.
- Record Incident Information from the Fire Phone
or Fixed Alarm Panel or if no phone or FAP
contact M.F.S. Operations or CFS State Communications
Centre.
- Decide on Level of Alarm Response ie If the
incident is structure fire, respond next
nearest brigade.
- Write Incident Information on the Blackboard.
Next to Arrive
- Check the board for incident information
- Don turnout uniform
- Put your name tag on the Appliance Board
- Prepare Appliances - open bay doors, plugs out, engine
started
- Load Specialist Equipment etc.
- Identify Officer in Charge
- Board Appliance
RESPONDING TO THE INCIDENT
In the Drivers Cabin
- The Driver is to concentrate on getting the crew and
appliance safely to the incident.
- Crewman to radio the Station (or if not manned a general
broadcast) that the appliance is - "..(Radio
callsigns)..Mobile to.. (incident address and
description)".
- Crewman should locate the incident address in the UBD
Street Directory and guide the driver to the incident.
In the Crew Cabin
- Maintain a safe and relaxed position while in transit.
